Welcome To Meditate For Clarity
Say “Cya-Later” to stress, and say “Hello-ello” to inner peace, relaxation, positivity and increased self awareness - Meditation is the way to do it. Once only used to gain a better understanding of the sacred and the mystical, meditation has been scientifically shown that it is very effective at relieving stress and achieving relaxation.
But that’s not all it can achieve. Meditation can basically be considered as a mind-body medicine. That’s a feat that many meditation practitioners can attest to.
Its good for your health. Its great for your emotional well being. Its incredible at raising your self awareness and has many other equally impressive capabilities, which were for a long time relatively unknown to the ordinary Joe Schmoe’s of the world.
If I were meditating where it all began where would I be sitting? Who would I be? Would I be a Tibetan monk? Would I be Buddha? Would I be sitting in a temple situated in Indonesia? What is the history of meditation. Many people these days, if asked that first question would think “Im Buddha”. Buddha is considered the face of meditation. Why is it that so many people think this? It’s partly due to the history of meditation and where it has its written foundations set. Whilst there is no credible source as to where meditation has it actual foundations set, one thing that researchers all agree on is that its has its roots in ancient times. Historians base meditation as first existing predominantly within Eastern cultures.
Some people would ask where did it come from in another light… Not by asking where its history geographically started came from or who it came from, but more so, what triggers the thought to sit there and concentrate on ones breathing for example? To practice a mental stillness that you may know as meditation… Well… There must have been a time where we began to become very curious about the world around us. We would have been itching to know where plants came from, where we came from most importantly, where other animals came from, where the whole planet and earth came from… And in this search for knowledge, we created two paths to give sustenance to this great thirst for knowledge. There was the search that lead us outside – through investigating the things around us. This became known as science. The other – was a more introspective avenue, where we looked inside, where we looked to ourselves to provide the answers with what our beliefs are. By clearing out mental chatter and learning about one-self, we start to get a feel for what it is our purpose is here, what the meaning of life is – that which we were created for.
However, history isn’t history without known dates and recorded facts.
That said, There are mentions, about what would today be classified as meditative practices, in texts that can be dated back to as early as 5000 years ago. Indian scriptures known as “Tantras” have existed since this time and are known to contain practices, that whilst not entirely called “Meditation” as such, but are much unlike the meditation exercises employed today. This, as far as we know, is considered where meditation began.
The history of meditation also has its roots in Chinese cultures, religious sects would use meditation to achieve focus and clarity in their daily life. Buddha, who is considered to be one of the forerunners in advocating meditation – which is partly the reason why Chinese cultures are so heavily involved in the act - doesn’t make his mark on history until about 500 B.C. This is some time after “meditation” is mentioned in Indian scriptures. Whether meditation migrated from India prior to this time, or whether it started in Asia is, as I said earlier, not yet actually know. Which leaves us a lot of leeway as to what to say about where it came from.
What we can say though, is that it did take many hundreds of years to bring itself from a practice past down only by word of mouth, down to the level where we can sit back in our comfy computer chairs and read about it simply at the press of a couple of buttons.
Meditation has come a long way, and it is certainly gaining momentum amongst the West, where we now benefit greatly from its healing properties.
Many people look at meditation with upturned noses, thinking that its reserved for the old bearded shaman sitting in a temple located in Nepal who’s only task in life is to sit there contemplating what it is he is actually devoting his life to. Whilst you might not be a man from Nepal with a long white beard, if your looking for meditation practices, you will be practicing some sort of contemplation - as well as reflection, deep thought and concentration.
Whilst different forms of meditation focus on different things, they all require quite thought, reflection and concentration.
Welcome to the world of Meditation!
